The Power of the People:
Voices via Petitions
 by Diane L. Richard
Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at 7:00PM
IN PERSON and ONLINE

Sometimes our ancestors had to “fight” for what they wanted. Sometimes they sought government authorization for certain activities.  These and other causes required petitions.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:00 PM at the OWASA Community Center, 400 Jones Ferry Rd, Carrboro, OR ONLINE via Zoom, to hear nationally recognized speaker Diane L. Richard present The Power of the People: Voices via Petitions.

Petitions are a means by which one person or many or a whole community can seek to change the status quo.  Much of early legislation in our country is a result of petitions. The Crown was also petitioned by individuals seeking redress to issues, challenges (too far to the nearest courthouse), taxation (the crushing level of), and more.  Not only can petitions give you names, dates, and even actual signatures, they can also reveal information about your ancestor's life.
